Last night proved relatively fruitful in my quest to customise my Zen Cart installation, hurrah!
I've had fun installing a grid layout mod for the categories (super easy compared to OSCommerce, I have to say) and doing minor tweaks on the stylesheet to get things to 'look right'. I'm also very happy with my decision to move hosting services a couple of months back, as the new host's control panel is much faster to load and better laid-out than my old host, and they seem to have their act together much better with regards to downtime.
My site (http://www.jennaappleton.com) is currently pointing to a splash page with links to Etsy, but I hope to send the new cart live on Monday.
It's actually quite a nice day for working at the computer - I like sitting at the window while it's overcast and dreary outside and warm inside. I have some dayjob work to do this afternoon and then it's back to the cart this evening to test the order functions. I'm being sustained by leftover pizza, raspberry cordial and a few mandarins.
Oscar and Alicia have been pretending to sleep on a blanket in front of the heater all morning, which is *unbearably* cute (and slightly dangerous on Alicia's part - when she's curled up she's all black, and she's on a plush black-brown rug in a dark room). Oscar rolls half-over periodically to expose his furry tummy. I fed them a small can of 'human' tuna and some cat mince (kangaroo mince, is a lean red meat and good for kitties) this morning so they're not feeling as though they need to go anywhere :P

Ohhhh can't wait to see what all your mods look like!
Playing around in zencart is so much fun isn't it?! hehehe
Pretty boring really, I'm sure - I'm mostly just playing with the CSS rather than the actual PHP ;)
I'm playing with the layout of the product page tonight - I don't like the default view much and I need to figure out how to code in some extra images to each page (I want to show two, maybe three product shots). I have to say that I'm making extensive use of Firebug and/or Chrome's 'inspect element' feature while I'm playing here, it helps me figure out what bit I need to change in what file :)
For extra pictures I just host them on the server then pop them in the product info section using the 'insert image' button.
I did read somewhere on the zencart forum about having small pics that enlarge when clicked on though.
Oh, I just reread my previous comment Anne - I meant that my *mods* are probably pretty boring, not playing around with zencart! I'm sorry that I wasn't very clear there :(
I have partially figured out the extra images from the zen forum (like you said - they display as thumbnails and enlarge when clicked etc - unfortunately this is as a popup and I don't like using popups if I can help it). The cart has that functionality built in apparently, but it's not clear that it's even there let alone how you use it from the Admin panel.
What I really want if I can manage it is to have all the available images display as thumbs either underneath or to the side of the main image, and the main image frame changes to one of the other thumbs when you click the thumb, if that makes sense. I'm sure I can figure it out given time and Google ^_^
(I can just see it now, a conversation in six months' time... manager at work: 'so how are you going with your maternity leave?'... me: 'great, I'm learning a whole bunch of PHP skills that are completely unrelated to my job, thanks very much')
